ABB including Biology at A-level (GCSE Grade B Mathematics), or equivalent alternative qualifications. Access to Leeds participants will receive a lower offer (see \’Selection principles\’ below). We welcome a wide range of qualifications — further details here. We may request a piece of written work or invite candidates to a selection interview. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are keen to support those who have the potential to succeed but whose personal circumstances may have affected their levels of achievement. For this reason, we encourage participation in the Access to Leeds scheme — enter the phrase \’Access to Leeds\’ into our search engine for details. In the biology component of your joint honours degree course you will study aspects of the structure, function, evolution, behaviour and ecology of animals and plants. There is a wide range of optional modules from which you can choose allowing you to tailor the course to your own requirements and interests. Students from a wide variety of backgrounds take courses involving History and Philosophy of Science. You don\’t necessarily need an A-level in science to do well, just an interest in the role of science, technology and medicine in society. You will be encouraged to reflect philosophically on the nature of science and its relations to other fields of endeavour and to develop a historical understanding of the social, political and economic setting of scientific work. All joint honours programmes combine a mixture of lectures, seminars and tutorials. In addition, science-based programmes include practical classes and projects; language-based programmes include oral classes and language laboratory work. Most modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and examination. Our undergraduates have access to the facilities you would expect from a world class university. Newly rehoused in state-of-the-art purpose-built laboratories, the Faculty of Biological Sciences is at the forefront of recent computers-in-learning initiatives. We have a full range of modern equipment: an experimental garden and glasshouses, a field station of 263 hectares, controlled environment rooms and electron microscopes. Our experienced staff can offer you support and information to help you plan your career effectively.
Our lively Philosophy society encourages after-lecture discussions, friendly debate and socials. Discover more here. BioSoc (our Biology Society) puts you in touch with like-minded students both on and off-campus. |
