The program of Economics is academic but also equips students with the necessary labor market skills and knowledge required by the profession.
General Objectives
— to develop the student’s capacity to think, write and speak effectively and creatively. — to develop an appreciation of and respect for social, moral, and ethical values as the foundation of one’s relationship to others and one’s responsibilities to the community. — to develop the student’s analytical, decision-making and communication competencies together with those qualities of self reliance, responsibility, integrity and self-awareness which will promote personal achievement and contribution to organizations. — to build breadth of perspective through the general education requirements and provide sufficient specialization to meet basic professional and career requirements. — to provide the student with the necessary requirements for academic and/or career advancement.
Specific Objectives
— To provide students with a foundation in Business in general and Economics in particular; — To empower our students to function as independent minds in professional, community and organizational environments; — To provide our students with knowledge that will prepare them for a successful professional career in economics, business, government and related fields; — To make our students conversant with the analytical, technological, research and communication skills necessary for a successful professional career in economics or related fields; — To equip our students with the solid foundations necessary for successful graduate work in economics or related fields; — To further a values-based approach that emphasizes probity and ethics in economic and business decisions. Learning Outcomes — Demonstrate their ability to communicate effectively in business situations through speaking, writing, and by use of electronic media. — Demonstrate their ability to build teams and work effectively within them. — Demonstrate awareness and capability of analysis of environmental (economic, social, political, legal, and ethical) trends and their impact on individuals and businesses. — Describe the application of manual and computer-based quantitative and qualitative tools and methodologies in identifying and solving problems and making decisions in business situations. — Critically evaluate and apply concepts, techniques, strategies, and theories from any appropriate discipline in business contexts. — Be able to conceptualize a wide range of constrained optimization problems in economics and related fields and will be able to apply formal mathematical analysis to evaluate these problems. — Understand and apply intermediate microeconomic principles including the model of perfect competition, price theory and their neoclassical extensions; graduates will be able to analyze behavior given changes in constraints, prices and costs. — Understand intermediate macroeconomic principles and will be able to apply standard macroeconomic models to the analysis of contemporary public policy issues or problems. — Be able to conduct basic econometric analysis including using data to estimate behavioral models, test hypotheses and measure quantitative relationships; they will have a basic understanding of mathematical statistics that underlies applied econometric analysis. Be prepared to accept productive jobs in consulting, business, finance, management, and related fields.
